Are Australian's paying $9 for a dozen eggs like some Americans are now paying?

I am taking up pigeons.

They are easier than chickens, and don't make all the racket.

3-4 pigeon eggs to 1 chicken egg, but richer eggs.

No. Not $9 per dozen but between $6 and $7 which is still very expensive for chook eggs when compared to a year ago when they were between $4 and $5 per dozen;

Your US $9 is approximately AU $14; Ouch;

We still have a good supply of eggs out here where i am in Rural Victoria; For Now at least....

Not so sure about the cities or major towns as i avoid the places like The Plague; I know there have been chicken farms declared to have "avian flu" so no doubt a shortage is coming to the cities or is even already there;

Ducks are also pretty quiet when there is no Drake in the flock but they do need more room and more water than pigeons; Good news is Ducks make great loyal pets and will follow you into your house if you NEED them to

I wish that I could have ducks, but they wouldn't be very happy here.

I like birds because they are all very observant and loyal creatures - at least when treated and observed properly by us.

All domestic birds I've been around wll give away the presence of outsiders, as wild birds will react in similar ways, up to and including attacking "the Enemy".

I like the calm cooing and warbling of the doves/pigeons, and they can still muster a good warning flush, and are pretty good judges of character in my experience, and as you observe, they are low-consumption birds, which helps in this desert environment.

This pesky "avian flu".....
